The EFS sensor is an innovative product used to detect fatigue cracks in metal structures. This product could be useful in many industies, including transportation, aviation, manufacturing, and more. This project was performed with the Material Technologies Corporation.
The EFS sensor utilizes an electrolyte gel, a sensor patch, and a potentiostat to monitor the fatigue status of the structure being interrogated. A small potential is applied between the sensor and the structure to induce a small current that changes due to the applied loading. The current measurements are collected and analyzed to determine the size and status of the fatigue crack. EFS has been successful at finding fatigue cracks as small as .005 inches in the labratory.
